MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

Newt Ables

Newt Ables was born about 1844 in South Carolina. Since he first appeared in the 1850 Murray County Census listings in the home of his mother, his father's name is unknown.

The 1850 Census indicated that his mother and all of his brothers and sisters had been born in South Carolina. Since Newt was the youngest child, age 6, this means that the family moved to Murray County between 1844 and 1850. It probably also means that his father died during that 6 year span.

That 1850 Census listing: Sarah Ables, age 42, head of household; Ezekial Ables, age 16; Amanda M. Ables, age 12; Osborn H. Ables, age 10; and William N. Ables, age 6.

Little is known about this young man's military service. Records in the Murray County Courthouse state that he enlisted in Company B, 37th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in June 1861. They also state that he died in Kentucky, probably in 1862. Confederate Army records simply confirm those details.

Since his military unit's history listed only one military engagement in 1862, it is logical that Newt died in that encounter, at Lexington, Kentucy, October 8, 1862.
