MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

Daniel Ballew, Jr.

1829-1864

Daniel Ballew (Jr.), was the son of Daniel (Sr.) and Harriet Jackson Ballew. He was born in South Carolina in 1829. His siblings were Sarah, Langston, Elizabeth, John, and Oliver.

During the 1840s Daniel (Sr.) brought his family to Murray County. Daniel (Sr.) had a brother named Isaac, who also moved his family to Murray about the same time. The 1850 Census enumerated both families in Murray.

The Census of 1850 listed the family of Daniel (Jr.) as: Daniel Ballew, age 21; Harriet Ballew, age 20; and Madison Ballew, age 1.

The 1860 Census listed the family: Daniel Ballew, age 30; Harrett Ballew; age 32; Madison Ballew, age 12: Henry A. Ballew, age 7; Nancy C. Ballew, age 5; and John J. Ballew, age 3. This Census listed Daniel's occupation as wagon maker. It indicated that the three youngest children had been born in Georgia.

Daniel fathered two other children: Elizabeth, born 1862; and Catherine Clarinda Ballew, born in 1864.

Family records list the family members as: Daniel (18290-1864); Harriet (1830-1904); Madison (1848-1929); Kimsey A. (1842-1915); Henry A. (1843- ); Nancy C. (1855- ); John Jackson Ballew (1857- ); Elizabeth "Bethie" (1862-1919); and Catherine Clarinda Ballew (1864- ).

On August 1, 1863, Daniel enlisted as a Private in Company A, 39th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Following his enlistment his unit participated in fighting at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee; Bridgeport, Alabama; Fort Loudon, Tennessee; Lenoir Station, Tennessee; Knoxville, Tennessee; Rocky Face, Georgia; Missionary Ridge (near Chattanooga); then all of the fighting moving towards Atlanta.

None of the available military records indicated that Daniel had died while on active duty in the Confederate Army. However, Harriet applied for a widow's pension from the State of Georgia and that document provides the following details: Daniel contracted bronchitis and, because of complications of that disease, he was sent to the hospital at Forsythe, Georgia. He died in that hospital on August 25, 1864.

Descendants of this Civil War soldier have lived in Murray County ever since.
