William Bates

William Bates was a name given to several men in the 1800s. This one was the son of Julius and Temperance Bates. He was born February 15, 1816; he married Rosa C. Keith, October 15, 1837. He died June 18, 1899.

The 1840 Census listed William Bates living in Murray County, Georgia.

The 1850 Census was the first to list all of the family members by name: William Bates, age 34; Rosa Bates, age 29; Nancy S. Bates, age 15; Milton J. Bates, age 10; Martha M. Bates, age 8; William N. Bates, age 7; Andrew J. Bates, age 5; Reuben C. Bates, age 3, and Sarah A. Bates, less than one year old. The mother had been born in South Carolina. The father and all of the children were born in Georgia.

Military service records indicate that Nelson Bates enlisted as a Private in Company B, 10th Regiment Georgia State Troops on January 3, 1862. He was mustered from that unit in May 1862, then enlisted in Company A, 34th Georgia Infantry Regiment, May 15, 1862. He died September 20, 1862, at Dalton, Georgia.

William Nelson Bates, the son of William and Rosa Bates, was born about 1843 and died in 1862.
