MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

George Jefferson Fain

George Jefferson Fain is thought to have been born in Murray County, Georgia.

The 1860 Census listed his family in Gordon County, Georgia, using the post office at Calhoun. It indicated that G. J. Fain, age 32, was an attorney-at-law. His wife was listed as M. E. Fain, age 23. The Census indicated they had been married only one year. The household also included two male teenagers: A. W. Fain, age 18, born in Ga., and James E. Rembert, age 17, born in SC. It is highly probable that Mrs. Fain had been a Rembert and that her brother was living with the newly weds–along with a much younger brother of G. J.'s.

Confederate military records indicate that G. J. Fain enlisted as a Private in Company E, 40th Infantry Regiment Georgia, March 4, 1862. A grave marker in Fain Cemetery, Gordon County, Georgia, reads: George Jefferson Fain, Ga. Infantry, C.S.A., died 6-3-1862.
