MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

Abraham Faith

Abraham Faith was born in Henry County, Georgia, in 1828. His parents were James and Nancy Faith, who moved in 1846 to Murray County. The Redwine Cove area became Whitfield County when Whitefield was formed.

The 1850 Census listed the family as: Nancy Faith, age 48, head-of-household; John Faith, age 24; Abraham Faith, age 22; William Faith, age 18; Elizabeth Faith, age 16; Early H. Faith, age 11; and James Faith, age 8.

Abraham married Sara Jane Owens in July 1854.

The Census of 1860 listed the family in Whitfield County, which had been formed from part of Murray following the 1850 Census. The 1860 listing: Abraham Faith, age 33; Sarah Faith, age 21; James R. Faith, age 5, Isak Faith, 10 months. This Census listed Abraham's occupation as railroad track hand. It indicated that every member of the family had been born in Georgia.

Abraham enlisted as a Private in Company F, 12th Georgia Cavalry Regiment. Family tradition states that Sara learned that Abraham was very sick, possibly near death. His unit was near Adairsville, Georgia, at that time. She rode alone to fetch him and bring him home. Shortly after she got him home, he died of pneumonia. She buried him in a small cemetery near present-day Tilton (Whitfied County). When Sherman's army came down the highway, they camped on the cemetery and destroyed or moved every grave marker. Sadly Sara Jane was never able afterwards to locate her husband's grave.
