James M. Green


A grave marker in Bates Cemetery, Eton, Georgia, reads: James M. Green, born 1846, died July 30, 1862, Bridgeport, Tenn., C.S.A.

Military records indicate that he enlisted as a private in Company D, 55th Georgia Infantry Regiment on May 12, 1862. They confirm that he died (of measles) at Bridgeport, Tenn., July 30, 1862.



Murray County Census records for 1860 listed J. M. Green, age 29, born in NC; Elisabeth Green, age 28, born in SC; Josephen Green, age 6, born in Georgia; and Harriett Green, age 1, born in Georgia. The family lived in Georgia Militia District 825 and used the post office at Rock Creek.
