James Headrick


James Headrick was born about 1834 in Tennessee. He was the son of Jacob and Mary Headrick. He and two brothers, John and Jacob (Jr.) served in the Union Army during the Civil War. James enlisted August 15, 1862, in Company B, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry. His brother John served in the same unit. Jacob (Jr.) enlisted in Company A., 8th Tennessee Volunteers Mounted Infantry.

When the war ended all three brothers returned to Murray County to live.

James and his wife, Elizabeth, were both born in Tennessee. All of their children were born in Georgia. They came to Georgia about 1855-56.

The 1860 Census listed their family as: James Hedrick, age 26; Elizabeth, age 10, Levi, age 3; and John M. Hedrick, age 1. They used the post office at Cohutta Springs.

The 1870 Census added 4 more children: Melinda Heddrick, age 9; Mary E. Age 6; James, age 3; and Daniel C. Heddrick, age 9 months. The family was living at Spring Place in 1870.

Both parents are buried at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery. His gravestone: James Headrick, Jan. 15, 1832 - April 14, 1912. Her marker: Elizabeth Headrick, wife of James Headrick, Aug. 28, 1836 - May 14, 1909.
