MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

William C. Lackey

William C. Lackey was born about 1841 in North Carolina. His father, William Lackey had been born in South Carolina. His mother was born in North Carolina.

The Census of 1860 listed this Murray County family as follows: William Lackey, age 60; Martha Lackey, age 44; William C. Lackey, age 19; Martha J. Lackey, age 17; Emaline A. Lackey, age 16; and John F. Lackey, age 12. The family used the post office at Fancy Hill.

Confederate military records indicate that he enlisted as a Private in Company E, 60th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, September 19, 1861. The same records state that he died of disease on November 28, 1861.

Private Lackey was one of the rare Civil War soldiers who was buried in his home county. He was buried in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in Murray County. His tombstone reads: Lackey, Pvt. William C. B-12/15/1839. Died 11/28/1861. Co E 4 BN GA Vols CSA.

Special thanks to Phyllis Headrick Boyd for making the museum aware of this gravestone!
