MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

John H. Latch

John H. Latch was born in South Carolina about 1841. About 1846 the family moved to Murray County, Georgia, near Hasslers Mills.

The 1850 Census for Murray County listed the family at Hasslers Mills and included: Malison, age 38; Lucinda, age 40; Nancy, age 12; John H., age 9; Martha J., age 6; Mary B., age 3; and Sarah J., age 2. Both parents and the first 3 children were born in South Carolina. The two younger children were born in Georgia.

Notice how differently the Census of 1860 listed the names: James M. Latch; Loucinda; Nancy M.; John H.; Martha J.; Mary B.; and Sarah A. Latch.

Some of the military records listed this man's name as Latch, others as Lance. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 11th Georgia Infantry Regiment, July 3, 1861. His unit was involved in fighting at Fairfax, Yorktown, Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, and Manassas–all in Virginia, in 1861 and 1862. They fought at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-3, 1863–where John was wounded and taken prisoner by the Union Army on July 2. On July 22, 1863, he died from wounds.
