MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

John W. Latch

John Wesley Latch was born in South Carolina about 1826.

He was first listed by name in the 1850 Census of Murray County, Georgia. That Census indicated that he was 24 years old and Rebecca was 18. They were the only two in the household.

The 1860 Census indicated that the family used the post office at Hassler's Mills. The family consisted of: John W, age 34; Rebecca, age 29; William, age 9; Charles, age 7; Phillip M., age 3; and Margrett M. Latch, age 1.

Military records listed him as Wesley Latch. He enlisted in Company B, 36th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, February 1, 1862. His unit engaged in battles mainly in Kentucky in 1862 and in Mississippi in 1863. He was killed during fighting at Vicksburg, Mississippi, June 20, 1863. He probably was buried there.
