George Washington Lemons was born about 1843 in Tennessee. By 1850 they were living in Murray County, Georgia, using the post office at Cohutta Springs.

The 1850 Murray County Census listed four teenagers with family name Lemons within the home of William and Sara Ray. That household included the following: William J. Ray, age 40, Sarah Ray, age 44; William C. Ray, age 77; Lucena Ray, age 35; Sarah J. Lemons, age 15; Frances M. Lemons, age 14; William J. Lemons, age 12; George W. Lemons, age 10; William L. Higdon, age 19; and B. F. Higdon, age 5.

The same household shown in the 1860 Census listed very different ages for some of the household: William Ray, age 98; Sarah Ray, age 52; William J. Ray, age 45; Lecena Ray; age 32; Frances Lemons, age 22; Washington Lemons, age 17; and Benjamin Lemons, age 15. It appears that the person shown as B. F. Higdon in 1850 was listed as Benjamin Lemons in 1860 Census.

Confederate Army records indicate that Washington Lemons enlisted as a Private in Company H, 36th Georgia Infantry Regiment. He survived the war.
