MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

Andrew, Jonathan, and Vanburen Martin

Three brothers, Andrew, Jonathan, and Vanburen Martin, died while serving in the Confederate Army.

The family was listed in the 1850 Census in Murray County as follows: Alexander, age 53; Sarah, age 51; Samuel A., age 26; Tilman P., age 24; Sarah C., age 21; Alexander K., age 18; Margaret A., age 17; Johnathan, age 14; Harriet M. Martin, age 12; Solomon B., age 10; Vanburen, age 8; and Andrew, age 6.

The Census of 1860 listed the father, mother, Solomon, Vanburen, and Andrew in the family home at Holly Creek. Jonathen, age 24, and Mary C. Martin, age 19, lived nearby.

The three brothers enlisted in Company C, 11th Georgia Infantry, Anderson Brigade, as Privates.

Andrew Joshua Martin died of smallpox in 1862.

Jonathan Martin was wounded twice: in October 1862 and January 1863. His military records contain no further information. Family records indicate that Jonathan died in the Civil War, probably from those wounds. Those records also reveal that he was married to Mary Caroline Loughridge and they had a son named William Clinton Martin.

Vanburen Martin was wounded at Rappahannock Virginia, August 23, 1862. He was killed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania July 2, 1863.
