Maj. M. D .L. McCroskey was born in McMinn County, Tenn., May 22,1830. He had business interests in Alabama and Atlanta and in 1858 he went to New York City and became associated with a leading mercantile house as a traveling salesman in all sections of the Union. At the beginning of the Civil War, he returned to his native South and arrived in Savannah in the spring of 1861. He was involved in the salt trade and manufacture during the war and received a major's commission from the Confederate government. He returned to New York and continued his mercantile persuits until 1890. He retired that year and settled with his family in Atlanta. During the summer season they would retire to his plantation in Murray County. It was one of the largest and most productive in North Georgia. He also owned a business block in Atlanta and a dairy farm on the outskirts of that city which was his winter residence.

In 1868 he was married to Miss Lizie Cam, daughter of John and Lizzie Carn of Hamburg, S.C. Their children were: Lizzie Bell and Julia Evans. Lizzie died in 1870.

The father of Major McCroskey was a native of Sevier County, Tenn., where he was born in 1806. He died in Cleveland, Tenn., in 1892. He married Sarah Stephenson, daughter of Andrew Stephenson of Sevier County, Tenn. Their children were: Louisa; Carolina; Amanda married J.T. Horde of Cleveland, Tenn.; Tennie and Harriet of Chattanooga and Addie, deceased. The mother of Major McCroskey died at Tunnel Hill, Ga., in 1871.
