Thomas B. McEntire


Thomas B. McEntire was born April 16, 1840, in Georgia. His parents were both born in North Carolina but all of their children were born in Georgia. The father, James L. McEntire, was listed in Murray County when the 1840 Census was taken.

The 1850 Census listed the family as: James L., age 40; Mary A., age 31; Thomas B., age 10; Martha E., age 8; John C., age 6; Mary J., age 5; Rosanna, age 3; Rebecca, age 2; and Joseph, less than one year old.

Family records indicate that the father's full name was James Lette McEntire who lived from 1809 to 1895. The mother was Mary Ann (Hemphill) McEntire. She lived from 1820 to 1898.

The family listed the following brothers and sisters for Thomas B. McEntire: Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" McEntire (1842-1914); John Cunningham McEntire (1843-1923); Mary Jane McEntire (1845-1930); Roseanna McEntire (1846-?); Joseph A. McEntire (1850-1868); Rebecca Malinda McEntire (1850-?); William McEntire (1852-?); Clarissa McEntire (1854-?); James Leach McEntire (1856-1920); Laura Ann McEntire (1853-?); Benjamin C. McEntire (1859-?); Emma G. McEntire (1862-1863); and Cooper McEntire (1863-?).

Thomas B. McEntire was an officer, a 2nd Lieutenant. He enlisted in Company H, 36th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment April 24, 1862. His unit participated in military engagements at Richmond, Kentucky, August 29-30, 1862; Vicksburg, Mississippi, March 29-May 18, 1863; and at Baker's Creek, Mississippi, May 16, 1863. Thomas McEntire was killed in the fighting at Baker's Creek.
