MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

George Washington Richardson

A tombstone in Wilbanks-Reed Cemetery, Murray County, Georgia, is inscribed: G. W. Richardson, Aug. 15, 1844. Killed in battle at Philadelphia, Tenn. About October 20, 1863. 3rd Conf. Cav. Co. F.

George W. Richardson (had to be George Washington Richardson), was the third child of Joseph J. and Harriet Richardson. The father was listed as the head of a household in Murray County in the 1840 Census. Only the name of the head of a household was named, individual family members were not named in that Census.

The 1850 Census contained the following:

    Joseph J. Richardson, age 34, born in NC;

    Harriet Richardson, age 33, born in GA;

    William Richardson, age 10, born in GA;

    Elizabeth Richardson, age 8, born in GA;

    George W. Richardson, age 6, born in GA;

    John H. Richardson, age 4, born in GA;

    James S. Richardson, age 1, born in GA.

The Census of 1860 listed George W. Richardson, then as age 15. The family used the post office at Rock Creek.

Three of the brothers, George, James, and John, enlisted in the same military unit.

Their military service began in November 1861, when they enlisted as a Private in Company C, 3rd Confederate, which was reorganized into Company F, 3rd Confederate, Whorton Brigade.

James and John survived the war but George was killed at Philadelphia, Tennessee, in fighting that lasted October 15-25, 1863.
