George Stockberger

George Stockberger served as an officer in the Confederate Army. He enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 39th Georgia Infantry Regiment, March 10, 1862. On December 1, 1863, he was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant. On June 22, 1864, he was promoted to Full Captain.

George was the son of Jacob and Mary Stockberger. The 1850 Census listed the family:

    Jacob, age 46, born in NC;

    Mary, age 43, born in NC;

    Winifred D., age 20, born in NC;

    William G., age 17, born in NC;

    George W., age 13, born in NC;

    Ann L. J., age 12, born in NC;

    Jacob E., age 10, born in GA;

    Joseph E., age 7, born in GA;

    Augustus E., age 5, born in GA;

    Nancy E., age 2, born in GA.

The family was not listed in the 1840 Murray County Census, but, because Jacob was born in Georgia, some 10 years before the 1850 Census, they moved to Murray around 1840.

Military records indicate that George W. Stockberger died at Macon, Georgia but contain no date and no further information about the circumstances of his death.
