MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

Robert Wood

The Robert Wood family came from South Carolina to Georgia, probably in the early 1840s. Robert and wife Martha were both born in South Carolina but all of their children were born in Georgia.

The Murray County Census for 1860 listed the family as follows:

    Robert Wood, age 36,

    Martha Wood, age 40,

    Jacob L. Wood, age 17,

    Greenberg H. Wood, age 14,

    John Wood, age 12,

    Wiott Wood, age 10,

    Margrett L. Wood, age 8,

    Nancy J. Wood, age 6,

    Martha C. Wood, age 4,

    Reuben Wood, age 7,

    Robert Wood, age 5.

During the Civil War the father and three oldest sons enlisted in the Confederate Army. Only the father returned home after the conflict; all three of his sons died while serving.

The son listed as Greenberg on the Census records was actually Greenbery, sometimes spelled Greenberry. Military records indicate that he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 39th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Cohutta Guards). He was captured by Union forces and died in a Prisoner-of-War camp at Camp Douglas, Illinois, December 17, 1864.

Jacob L. Wood enlisted in Company K, 14th Georgia Volunteer Infantry (Etowah Guards) at Spring Place, Georgia, March 1, 1862. He was killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862.

John M. Wood enlisted as a 3rd Corporal in Company D, 22nd Infantry Regiment Georgia, September 3, 1861. Promoted to Full Second Lieutenant, August 6, 1862. He died in Virginia, April 29, 1864, but military records contain no details regarding how or exactly where he died.

Three brothers from this family died in Confederate Army service.
