MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

Joseph B. Holland Family

Joseph Holland was the son of Jacob Holland and Elizabeth Dabs.

Joseph B. Holland enlisted as a Private in Company A, 39th Georgia Infantry, a unit formed in Murray County, and usually referred to as the "Cohutta Rangers." The roll of April 30, 1864, showed he was still a member of that unit. He was captured by Union Army and took an oath to serve in that army rather than become a prisoner-of-war. He survived the war and returned to Murray County.

On November 7, 1866, Joseph married Margaret Jane (Cain) Plemons. Her husband, William E. Plemons, had been killed at Chickamauga in the war.

Joseph and Margaret had the following children:

+ John Henry Holland, born August 29, 1868 in Murray County, Georgia. Died November 30, 1939 in Hamilton County, Tennessee.+William Holland, born January 1869 in Murray County, Georgia.

+Margaret Holland, born December 17, 1872, Murray County, Georgia, died October 10, 1942. Married Ulysses Grant Thomas, August 1895, in Murray County.

+Mary E. Holland, born September 15, 1874, in Murray County, died July 14, 1952. Married Adolphus Higdon, November 2, 1906, in Murray County.

+Georgia Holland, born November 3, 1877, died December 13, 1908, Murray County. Married (unknown) Wilson.

+Amanda Holland, born January 29, 1881, died February 6, 1953. Married Oscar Russell McLain.

Joseph Holland died January 23, 1889 and was buried in Summerour Cemetery, Murray County, Georgia.
