MURRAY COUNTRY FAMILIES

Samuel Leamon Family
Submitted by Bessie Mayers

Samuel Leamon was born February 22, 1819, in Tennessee and died August 7, 1896, in Sumac, Murray County, Georgia. Sometime about 1841 he married Anna Jane Berkshire (Brookshire) she was born in 1825 in SC and died in 1877 at Sumac, Murray County, Georgia.

The Census of 1860 listed the family living in McMinn County, Tennessee, using the post office at Calhoun, Tennessee. Members enumerated were: S. A. Lemons, age 40; Jane Lemons, age 35; Sarah E. Lemons, age 17; William J. Lemons, age 15; Rebecca C. Lemons, age 12; James W. Lemons, age 9; Robert M. Lemons, age 7; Francis A. Lemons, age 5; Laura E. Lemons, age 3; and Emma C. Lemons, age 9 months.

Where the family was living in 1870 remains a mystery.

The 1880 Census listed the family living in the Tenth District of Murray County and indicated that Samuel was then 60 years old and a widower. The following were listed in that household: Rebecca Leamon, age 30; Robert Leamon, age 27; Andrew Leamon, age 25; Laura E. Leamon, age 22; Timothy Leamon, age 17; Eveline Leamon, age 14; and Anna Leamon, age 12.

This Census indicated that every child had been born in Tennessee. Since the youngest was then age 12, the family had moved to Murray sometime after 1868.

Some of the children eventually moved back to Tennessee but many stayed in Murray Co. and raised their Families. Children as follows:
