FREE NEGROES LIVING IN
MURRAY COUNTY, GA.
IN 1870

The following lists of Negroes living in Murray County, Georgia, was created by extracting applicable data from the Census of 1870. The complete Census is available at the Murray County Library in Chatsworth, and anyone wanting to see relationships between various people listed here should refer to the actual Census records showing who lived in each household.

These lists are especially important because they were created by extracting the first official recording of information about Negroes as individuals–with names, approximate year of birth, state where born, and militia district in which each person lived. Earlier Censuses only counted them and published the Slave Schedules giving owner's names and number owned.

When the 1870 Census was taken, slavery had ended and all black people were free citizens. The very young, born after the slaves were freed and before this Census was taken, truly were the first Negroes in Murray County to have been born free. This list will help researchers identify those born free and those that had been slaves.

Each line contains an individual's name, sex, approximate year of birth, state where born, and militia district within Murray County where the person lived. An asterisk (*) following a name identifies those classified by the Census as Mulatto, a person having both white and Negro blood.

Note: The lists by militia districts appear first, followed by an alphabetical listing of all Negroes living in the county in 1870.
