Josiah Henry Zant, Sr., was born February 24, 1842, at Spring Place, Georgia. His father was James Solomon Zant, Sr. and his mother was Rebecka Lineen Thiess.

Josiah married Margaret Virginia Wisenbaker, March 30, 1870 in Lowndes County, Georgia. His second marriage was to Susan A. McLeod, January 9, 1873.

Josiah's children were: Martha Virginia "Mattie" Zant (1871-?); Beulah Frances Zant (1874-1968); Catherine Elfe Zant (1875-1955); Solomon "Sol" Zant (1877-1958); Thomas Edwin Zant (1879-1953; Josiah Henry Zant, Jr. (1883-1954); William Douglas Zant (1885-1946); James Archibald Zant (1887-1949); and Floyd Rembrandt Zant (1888-1947).
