MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
I WONDER
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

I'VE PICKED UP ARROWHEADS AT TIMES
AND WONDERED LONG IF THESE
HAD GONE AMISS OR FOUND THEIR MARK
WHEN SHOT BY CHEROKEES.
I FOUND A MIMIE BALL UPON
RESACA'S BATTLEGROUND-
COULD IT HAVE CAUSED A MAN TO FALL?
I MUSED AT WHAT I'D FOUND.
I'LL NEVER KNOW- JUST WONDER IF
THE ARROW HIT THE SPOT,
OR IF THE LEADEN BULLET CLAIMED
SOME SOLDIER'S LIFE OR NOT.
PERHAPS WE SHOULDN'T FRET ABOUT
THE THINGS OF LONG AGO.
IT MIGHT NOT CHANGE WHAT IS AHEAD
IF WE THE PAST COULD KNOW.
FAR BETTER THAT WE THINK ON THINGS
UNFOLDING DAY BY DAY
AND THINGS WHICH IN THE FUTURE MAY
BE THROWN INTO OUR WAY.
