MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
THE OLD SONGS
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

NOW I LIKE TO HEAR THE OLD SONGS
THAT HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME
ALTHOUGH SOME PERHAPS ARE LACKING
IN THE MELODY OR RHYME.
MOST OF THEM CONTAIN A MESSAGE
WHICH THE WRITER WOULD IMPART
TO REVIVE SOME WEARY SPIRIT
OR MAKE GLAD A LONELY HEART.
AND THE MUSIC CALMS THE RESTLESS
AS IT FALLS UPON THE EAR,
BRINGING PEACE, INSTILLING COMFORT
WHILE REPLACING DREAD AND FEAR.
YES, I LIKE TO HEAR THE OLD SONGS
HYMNS AND BALLARDS OF THE PAST-
AFTER "ROCK AND ROLL'S" FORGOTTEN
THEY'LL BE LIVING TO THE LAST.
