MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
NOT OURS TO WONDER WHY
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

WHY SHOULD I HANG AROUND SO LONG
I'D TRULY LIKE TO KNOW
MY YEARS ARE PAST THREE-SCORE AND TEN
AND WHERE DID THEY ALL GO?
I'VE SEEN A BUNCH OF KIDS GROW UP,
AND NOW THEIR KIDS ARE GROWN-
THOSE CHILDREN OF MY NEIGHBORS
AND, YES, SOME OF MY OWN.
WHEN MANY BETTER FOLKS THAN I
HAVE LONG SINCE PASSED AWAY,
I VERY OFTEN WONDER WHY
I'M STILL AROUND TODAY.
PERHAPS, THERE'S SOMETHING YET FOR ME
TO DO THOUGH I AM WEAK-
SOME ACT OF LOVE OR KINDNESS
OR WORD THAT I MIGHT SPEAK.
I GUESS WE SHOULDN'T QUESTION
THE MASTER'S ALL-WISE PLAN,
AND IN THE TIME REMAINING
TRY TO DO THE BEST WE CAN.
