MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
THE TREES ARE HIS
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

"BUT ONLY GOD CAN MAKE A TREE"
TRUE WORDS THE POET SPOKE.
AND WHO IS THERE TO DISAGREE?
CAN SCIENCE MAKE AN OAK?
OF MAN-MADE SATELLITES WE READ,
IN SPACE WE SEE THEM SHINE,
AND PRAISE MEN FOR THIS MIGHTY DEED-
WHY CAN'T THEY MAKE A PINE?

THE WISDOM OF THIS MODERN BREED
IS FOOLISHNESS WITH GOD.
CAN MORTALS MAKE A MUSTARD SEED
WITH STRENGTH TO BURST THE SOD?
THE SPARK OF LIFE MAN CAN'T PROVIDE
AND THUS 'TWILL ALWAYS BE,
'THO HE A MILLION YEARS ABIDE
HE'LL NEVER MAKE A TREE.
THE BREATH OF LIFE GOD MUST IMPART
'TIS KEPT FROM YOU AND ME.
HE, EVERMORE AS AT THE START,
ALONE CAN MAKE A TREE.
