FORT MOUNTAIN
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

I CAN'T TELL HOW LONG FORT MOUNTAIN
WITH THE ROCK-CLIFFS ON THE SIDE
HAS BEEN STANDING HIGH IN MURRAY
LOOKING DOWN ON VALLEYS WIDE.
SCIENTISTS MAY HAVE AN ANSWER,
HOW AND WHEN IT CAME ABOUT.
MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE NO REASON
THEIR PROJECTIONS NOW TO DOUBT.
THAT AN EARTHQUAKE THREW IT SKYWARD,
THAT THE LAND AROUND IT FELL,
OR TO VENTURE WHEN IT HAPPENED-
SURE IT'S MORE THAT I CAN TELL.
BUT I KNOW THAT IN CREATION
GOD DIVIDED LAND FROM SEA -
THAT'S ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE
AND IT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME.
IF 'TWAS THEN HE MADE FORT MOUNTAIN
OR TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO;
IF HE MADE IT IN A MOMENT
OR IF BY A PROCESS SLOW;
IF AND WHEN AND HOW - NO MATTER,
'TISN'T OURS TO UNDERSTAND,
BUT I'M SURE THAT OLD FORT MOUNTAIN
WAS CREATED BY HIS HAND.
