MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
THE MIGHTY MAY FALL
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

REGARDLESS OF THE STRENGTH YOU BOAST,
OR OF THE ODDS YOU CLAIM,
THE TEAM THAT HITS HOME RUNS THE MOST
MAY YET NOT WIN THE GAME.
SOMETIMES IT IS THE QUITE UNKNOWN
WHO SET THE MIGHTY DOWN-
WHO TAKE THE RULER OFF HIS THRONE
AND STRIP HIM OF HIS CROWN.
AND ALL THE EXPERTS WHO HAD THOUGHT
THE GAME WAS "IN THE SACK"
HAVE THEIR PREDICTIONS COME TO NOUGHT
AND WISH THEY HAD 'EM BACK.
THE MORAL IS; THE CELLAR TEAM
MAY REACH THE HIGHEST SLOT-
DON'T OVERLOOK THE LITTLE GUYS
WHO GIVE IT ALL THEY'VE GOT.
