MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
WORN-OUT WAGON WHEEL
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

A BROKEN, WORN-OUT WAGON WHEEL
I SAW NOT FAR FROM HENCE–
AN OBJECT NOW OF USELESSNESS
IT LEANED AGAINST THE FENCE.
IT'S NOW A RELIC OF THE PAST,
ITS YEARS OF LABOR SPENT–
NOW JUST A WHITEWASHED MAILBOX POST,
A DRIVEWAY ORNAMENT.
IT TURNED TO BRING THE SETTLERS IN,
HAULED TIMBER FROM THE WOODS.
IT HELPED THE FARMER CLEAR HIS LAND
THEN HELPED HIM REAP HIS GOOD.
NO DOUBT IT TOOK SOME FOLKS TO CHURCH
AND SOMETIME LIKE AS NOT
IT BORE A CASKET DOWN THE ROAD
TO SOME SMALL BURIAL PLOT.
STRANGE OBJECT OF MY SENTIMENTS?
WELL, THAT'S THE WAY I FEEL
WHEN I SEE LEANING ON THE FENCE,
A WORN-OUT WAGON WHEEL.
