MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
THE BURDEN-BEARER
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

I JUST COULDN'T BEAR MY BURDEN ALONE,
THE WEIGHT WAS TOO MUCH FOR ME.
BUT JESUS REACHED DOWN AND MADE IT HIS OWN
AND SAID, "I'LL BEAR IT FOR THEE."

AND TAKING THE CROSS, FORSAKING THE CROWN,
HIS LOVE FOR US HE DID SPEAK-
II I'LL BEAR IT FOR THEE"- FOR THIS HE CAME DOWN.
HE KNEW THAT OUR FLESH WAS TOO WEAK.

AND SO WAS FULFILLED A PROMISE TO MEN
MADE MANY LONG YEARS BEFORE. THE SUFFERING CHRIST HAD SHOULDERED OUR SIN
AND WILLING THE LOAD HE BORE.
"I'LL CARRY YOUR SORROWS, BEAR ALL YOUR GRIEF,

AND BE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY."
THEN LET US NOW SHOW OUR TRUST AND BELIEF
AND HELP BEAR THE LOAD TODAY.
