MURRAY COUNTY POETRY

Poems by Murray Poets and Poems About Murray County
THE TENTH COMMANDMENT
by
John Homer Luffman
1910-1987

I THINK PERHAPS IT'S SAFE TO SAY
MUCH OF LIFE'S ILL WOULD PASS AWAY
IF ONE COMMANDMENT - NUMBER TEN -
COULD BE BELIEVED AND KEPT BY MEN.

"THOU SHALT NOT COVET" - HE'LL SUPPLY
OUR NEEDS THO' WE MAY WONDER WHY
OUR EARTHLY GOODS CANNOT COMPARE
WITH MANY OTHERS', HERE AND THERE.

"THOU SHALT NOT COVET" - THINGS OF EARTH
FOR ALL THEIR PRESTIGE AND THEIR WORTH.
EARTH'S TREASURES CANKER AND DECAY-
THEIR PLEASURE LASTS BUT FOR A DAY.

"THOU SHALT NOT COVET"- FOR HIS GRACE
WILL BE ENOUGH IN ANY CASE.
MORE THAN WE MERIT WE'LL BE SENT-
THEN WHY CAN MAN NOT BE CONTENT?

HIS KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT'S BEST FOR ME IS MORE THAN MINE COULD EVER BE. HE'LL NOT FOR BREAD GIVE ME A STONE IF I WISH NOTHING BUT MY OWN.
